Liam Caskie never saw a checkered flag racing motorcycles on the dirt track at Welland County Speedway this season that he didn’t take home with him.
Besides leading all riders with 28 victories — in as many starts — the young rider from Brantford also won points championships in the 450 Novice and Open Novices classes. In each class, he ended the night in victory lane every Saturday in the nine-program season.
Caskie also went undefeated in the Youth division, going 5-0, but he was not in the starting lineup for the final race of the season last weekend and wound up finishing second in points. Luke Beattie edged Caskie for the track title 123 points to 115.
Doug Lawrence and Rodrick Scott raced to two points championship each as racing returned at the Welland track without pandemic restrictions for the first time since the pandemic.
Lawrence also topped the Open Expert and 450 Expert classes in wins, with five and three, respectively.
In 2022, Scott was the class of the 450 Intermediate and Open Intermediate divisions throughout the nine-event season taking seven checkered flags in each division.
Welland County Motorcycle Club president Sean Gillespie, whose all-volunteer organization owns and operates the track, said the season ended with an “awesome night of racing.”
“I want to thank all the fans, racers, volunteers and sponsors for making the 2022 racing season such a success,” he said.
